Today's an anniversary of sorts: two years ago today I rid my life of cable TV. Haven't missed it for a second. I haven't been totally without any electronic entertainment; I've been watching TV shows on DVD and the internet. I watch what I want, when I want, and I don't have to sit through endless commercials for products of which I'm already aware and have no intention of buying.
Every now and then I wonder if my cablelessness (how's that for a word!) is causing me to miss out on something. Then I'll visit someone who still has cable and I'll realize that nope, I'm not missing a thing.
Once again, if you've ever entertained the notion of getting rid of cable but were unsure about it, I urge you to do it. Trust me, you won't regret it. You have better things to do with your life than watch the ten different cupcake shows or the seven different shows about little people families or even the one where people buy storage spaces and then root through what's inside them.
I have Sky in the UK but I record practically everything I watch so don't need to watch adverts. If I had to wait for DVD releases here I'd go insane though and buying from abroad is too expensive. The fact is, if you phone up to cancel they give you 3 months free anyway and I think everyone I know does that now and then.
ReplyDeleteI called my cable company and told them I wanted to cancel, and they said would I reconsider if they'd give me a discount. I said OK, and they said they could knock a measly $10 off the monthly price of $101. I told them forget it and canceled.
ReplyDeleteWe got rid of cable years ago and then signed up again to see if we were missing anything. Nope. It's gone now and no one here has noticed. Between Netflix and YouTube, not to mention DVDs, we have everything covered and no commercials.
ReplyDeletePaula: Same thing happened to me, although I didn't sign up again. Every now and then I'll wonder if I'm missing something or if cable has somehow gotten better, and I'll visit my friend who still has cable and I realize I'm not missing anything. I can't stand having to sit thru 12 or 14 commercials in a row while I'm trying to watch a show.
