Welp, this was inevitable. This week the BBC reported on the restarting of the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, Switzerland, accidentally calling it the "Hardon" Collider.
Even better was the on-screen caption that read, "Coming up, Hardon Collider Restart." The red-faced network officials did their best to maintain their dignity as they quickly corrected the error.
I have to confess that every time I see the name, something in my brain just automatically reads it as "Hardon," so this gaffe doesn't surprise me in the least.
The Large Hadron Collider is the largest particle collider and indeed the largest machine in the world. It lies inside a circular tunnel seventeen miles in circumference, 574 feet below ground near Geneva, Switzerland.
The Collider was constructed in order to confirm the existence of the theoretical Higgs boson particle, as well as answer fundamental questions of physics, quantum mechanics and general relativity, while exploring the structure of space and even time itself.
While the world at large tittered and snickered at the BBC's gaffe, the Collider quietly went back online, accidentally opening a doorway into a dark, Hell-like dimension and releasing a horde of monstrous, tentacled Lovecraftian nightmare creatures into our world.
The Swiss military was quickly overrun by the ghastly army of demons, malignant spirits and Hell Barons, which has quickly spread across most of Central Europe. World leaders are hopeful that the Collider can be successfully powered down soon, before the entire planet is overrun by the shambling swarms of Elder Ones pouring from the void.

ReplyDeleteNice touch of irony misspelling "order" in an article about misspelling.
