Let Zygons Be Zygons

More news this week from the BBC regarding the upcoming Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special: The Zygons are back!

The Zygons are an alien race that crashed landed on Earth centuries ago, into Loch Ness in Scotland. They can alter their shape to resemble and impersonate any human. Handy! They also control a cybernetic creature called a Skarasen with which they plan to conquer Earth. They're also dependent on the Skarasen for its lactic fluid (ewww!). The dinosaur-like Skarasen no doubt spawned the legend of the Loch Ness monster.

The Zygons have long been fan favorites despite the fact they appeared in just one story wayyyy back in 1975. I drew a Zygon a while back, which you can see here or here.

Why so popular? My guess is they owe it all to their squishy, tentacled looks. The Zygon suits were probably the most elaborate ever made by the cash and time-strapped BBC. They still hold up reasonably well even today. That's one of the original Zygons in the photo above.

And here's a look at the all-new updated Zygon suit. Not bad! It's definitely an upgrade, but pays homage to the original.

As good as the updated version looks here, I think I still prefer the original. The new one looks fiercer, but the old one looks more... nautical somehow. Maybe it'll grow on me once I see it in action.

One things for certain: neckties were probably never invented on the Zygon home world! Hi-yoooo!!!
