December Doodles

I have this journal (it's not a diary!) that contains calendar pages at the beginning of every month. I make my own calendars at home and have no need for the one in the journal, so I fill up each day's box with a doodle.

We wrap up the year with a couple doodles based on popular internet sensations: Grumpy Cat on the 21st, and Ikea Monkey on the 13th.

Some bad news for doodle fans: This will be the final installment of Journal Doodles until further notice. I looked in at least five different stationery stores (now that I think about it, does any city really need five separately owned stationery supply companies? Wouldn't two be more than enough?) and no one had any journals with calendars like this inside. It's odd, some years they make them with calendar pages, some they don't. I guess 2013 is the year they don't.

To be totally honest I can't say I'm too broken up about this. I was getting kind of doodled out. It was starting to get hard to not repeat myself as I tried to come up with over 365 (counting the blank spaces) different doodles.

With all the recent news about Disney buying Star Wars dominating the media, I thought it high time I acknowledged the event in the form of journal doodles. So without further ado, here's this month's all-Star Wars doodles! Original Trilogy characters only please-- no Queen Amidala (who is apparently royalty but can also somehow be elected), whiny Anakin or (shudder) Jar Jar.

Gah, it's November already! Where has the year gone? It's time to start shopping for next year's journal (it's not a diary).

Quite a few monsters in October's doodles, which I suppose is appropriate. Also for the first time I filled up the giant vertical box at the right. Probably won't be doing that again, as it takes too long to color in.

That's Ben Grimm in the upper left, Spock on the 9th, and if you're a fan of restorations of classic art, you'll no doubt recognize the chap on the 15th.

If you remove the large fangs, the guy in the top row, third box from the left kind of looks like a teacher I had in high school. That's Bert next to him, no doubt glaring at Ernie. Looks like Pufnstuf there on the 11th. And is that shrill celebrity Joan Rivers on the 20th?

That looks like Batman on the 3rd. Boy am I glad those movies are over. Gandalf shows up on the 9th, trying to figure out how they're going to stretch The Hobbit into three films. The kid on the 16th kind of looks like me in high school. Well, maybe I wasn't quite that bad, but if felt like it at the time. Sauron's keeping an eye on things on the 27th. And Ghost Rider is there in the last panel, wishing someone would make a decent movie of him someday.

Quite often people ask me why all of the characters I draw tend to look pissed off and angry. Can you blame them? Look at the state of the world! The biggest and most vocal opponent of Global Warming just reversed his stance and admitted that it's real, the area in which I live is suffering from the worst drought in recorded history, the antics of the two dimbulb stars of the Twilight movies gets more attention and media coverage than how health care reform will affect us all, and it's beginning to look like the hot button issue of gay marriage is going to be decided in the learned halls of a farkakte chicken restaurant.

Of course they look pissed off!

I'm starting to find it hard to not repeat myself with the doodles. I'll think I've got a good idea for one and then I leaf through the earlier pages and see I've already done something similar. It's not that I'm running out of ideas; believe me I have plenty. It's just that sometimes it's hard to come up with an idea that'll fit in a 1" x 1.5" box. Do you see how I suffer for your enjoyment?

Nothing much to say about this month's doodles, other than sometimes it's hard to come up with 30-31 new ones each month. Sometimes I'll start drawing one and think, "This seems familiar somehow." I'll leaf through the earlier months and sure enough, I've already drawn a guy with a Tie Fighter head. Not really, but you get the idea.

April around these parts was very different this year. Normally April in Evansville means 30 straight days of rain, resulting in rivers that spill out of their banks, swamp-like back yards and mosquitoes the size of carrier pigeons. This year we scarcely had any rain at all in April, to my surprise and general approval. Of course that just means May will likely be filled with goose-drowners and I'll end up rowing to work.

If I had to declare a theme for the April doodles, I'd probably have to say "eyes." Eyes and teeth. For some reason I always end up drawing lots of big and ridiculous looking eyes.

March is generally not one of my favorite months. At the risk of pooping all over everyone else's fun, I can't stand all the March Madness stuff that goes on this time of year. I don't watch the games, I have no idea who's playing, I don't understand the seeds and brackets and all that hooey, and for the love of Benji I do not want to throw away money betting on the games.

Also if you're in advertising as I am, it's as inevitable as the tides that a client will want an ad that says "Madness In March Sale" as the headline. And every time they do it, they think they're the first one to think of such a clever pearl of advertising wisdom. Feh.

There are a couple of doodles here that aren't my best work. That's because it's time for some new glasses. I'm getting tired of holding the paper at arm's length and trying to draw on it. As soon as my new insurance kicks in, it's off to the optometrist. A blind artist ain't gonna be any use to anyone.
