Baby, It's Banned Inside

This month SJWs continued to prove they're the worst people on Earth by calling for an immediate and permanent ban of perennial Christmas carol Baby, It's Cold Outside

According to these geniuses, the song is highly offensive in these days of the #MeToo movement, as it glorifies sexual assault (!) and must be stricken from our society with utmost force.

Jesus wept. Is there anything that doesn't offend these people?

I know what you're thinking here: "But Bob, you said the very same thing as the people you're currently denouncing!"

Yes, that's partially true. Way back in 2010, I wrote a series of posts I called Creepy Christmas Classics, in which I took a (hopefully) humorous look at traditional carols and mocked their now inappropriate lyrics. Among the songs I mocked was Baby, It's Cold Outside, which I called "a heartwarming Yuletide ode to date rape."

There's one important difference here though: my denouncement of the song was a joke. I wrote it in character, so to speak, as part of a bit. I wasn't actually serious when I claimed the song was really about a man drugging a woman and forcing himself on her.

You remember what a joke was, right? It's a story or phrase with a humorous climax, intended to provoke laughter. We used to hear them a lot before the Dark Times. Before the Empire.

See, I know that the song was written in 1944 by Broadway composer Frank Loesser, and he and his wife Lynn sang it together at cocktail parties to the delight of their guests. I'm aware that it was written for the couple's friends, and never really meant to be heard or performed in public. And I know it's about two consenting adults engaging in playful banter as they flirt with one another. It's all very innocent, and there's no underlying current of sleaze or rape. The whole "controvery's" silly and overblown.

But that's because I'm a rational human being, and not a knee-jerk SJW who must wipe out any and all dissenting opinions. I try to save my outrage for things that actually matter, like the antics of the orange homunculus in the White House.

All that said, even though I don't really think the song's about date rape, I do wonder how the hell it ever became a beloved Christmas carol! There's nothing Christmassy in it whatsoever, other than maybe the mention of snow and bad weather.

Now if you want a REALLY Creepy Christmas Classic, then go with Santa Baby. That's one's just straight up about a whore. No, strike that. At least a whore charges for her services. This song's about a shameless slut who'll do anyone for furs and jewels.

Ghosts Of Christmas Past

Hey, Christmas is almost here! That means it's almost over too! Huzzah!

Please note that I'm not some kind of Scrooge who hates the Yuletide season, I just hate what it's become. I can do without all the frenzy and shopping and spending money you don't have and family drama and all that.

But I digress.

Here's a compilation of some of my personal favorite Christmas bloggings from the past few years.

Don't have a lot of money to spend on gifts this year? Don't be embarrassed! Just print, cut out and hang this special Economic Meltdown Christmas Gift gift tag on your presents, and your friends and family will be so impressed they won't notice the chintziness of your gifts!

Do you love Christmas Carols? Me neither! Here are a few of my least favorites:
My all time least favorite carol. If this grim, dirge-like tune doesn't make you feel like sticking a shotgun in your mouth during the holiday season, nothing will.
A cheerful Yuletide duet that's an ode to date rape!
Ah, nothing says "Christmas" like this salute to greed, capitalism and whoring yourself for high-ticket gift items.

Think some of our American Christmas traditions are weird? You ain't seen nothing yet!

• No Spanish Nativity scene is complete without El Caganer, a charming figure of a little man taking a huge dump.

• Kids in Spain (again with the Spain) love the Tio De Nadal, a hollow anthropomorphic log that they beat with sticks until it craps out gifts. No, that wasn't one long typo.

Happy Holidays!

Creepy Christmas Classics #3: Santa Baby

Hey, it's Christmas Carol time again! Everywhere you go this month, you'll hear all those beloved carols you've heard ten thousand times before, whether you want to or not. Oftentimes I wonder how some of these songs ever became classics. My theory is that the public has heard them so many times that the lyrics have been rendered meaningless. If anyone actually sat down and listened to them, half of these so-called "classics" would be stricken from the list.

Case in point: Santa Baby. Can someone please explain why this is a beloved holiday classic? It's an admittedly catchy tune, but with a wildly inappropriate undercurrent. It's nothing more than a song about a shallow gold-digger asking Santa for an appalling array of big ticket items, which she expects to receive because she's been "good." And of course, "good" in this context means, "managed to keep this year's number of sexual partners in the single digits."

Let's examine the lyrics, shall we?

Santa baby, just slip a Sable under the tree for me;
Been an awful good girl, Santa baby,
So hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa baby, a '54 convertible too, light blue;
I'll wait up for you, dear; Santa baby,
So hurry down the chimney tonight

Think of all the fun I've missed;
Think of all the fellas that I haven't kissed;
Next year I could be just as good...
if you check off my Christmas list
Boo doo bee doo

Santa baby, I want a yacht and really that's not a lot;
Been an angel all year; Santa baby,
So hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa honey, one little thing that I really do need...
The deed... to a platinum mine, Santa baby,
So hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa cutie, and fill my stocking with the duplex and checks;
Sign your 'X' on the line, Santa cutie,
and hurry down the chimney tonight

Come and trim my Christmas tree
with some decorations bought at Tiffany's;
I really do believe in you;
Let's see if you believe in me

Santa baby, forgot to mention one little thing... A ring...
I don't mean on the phone; Santa baby,
So hurry down the chimney tonight

Hurry down the chimney tonight
Hurry, tonight!

What a horrible song for the holidays. It would be bad enough if the avaricious broad in the song asked Santa for jewelry and furs, but she goes way off the deep end and asks for cars, yachts and even real estate.

If that wasn't enough, Santa Baby is always sung in a "cutesy" Betty Boop type of voice (there's even a "boo doo bee doo" line!), which registers pretty high on the Creep-O-Meter. It's also sometimes sung in a sultry, breathy Marilyn Monroe tone. A Christmas carol sung by a pouty woman-child or a voluptuous sexpot just seems wrong.

Oh, but we're not done! Our high-maintenance heroine doesn't just recite her shallow list of high-priced gifts to Santa. The whole song heavily implies that she'll be waiting for Santa in her boudoir, ready to offer him a fleshy reward if he comes through with the loot. What a lovely message for the holidays.

The song was originally record by Eartha Kitt in 1953, and was a huge hit for her. Other singers who've covered the tune: Madonna, RuPaul (!), Everclear (!!) and Mae West. Yes, when Madonna and RuPaul want to record your song, how can it be anything but an appropriate Christmas carol?
