Madge & Morty Canasta

I drew Mrs. Madge Canasta way back in February of 2009, and I promised that someday I'd draw her husband. Well, today's the day. Meet Mr. Morty Canasta.

Morty spends a lot of time on the golf course (no doubt because it's 100% Madge-free) down in Boca Raton, home of early bird specials, no-fault insurance and Sans-A-Belt slacks.

My style's changed somewhat since I first drew Madge, so it was a challenge trying to draw Morty so that he matched her.

Morty's pink shirt was a last minute addition. Originally it was light blue, to compliment his shorts. But then I thought about how awful most golf outfits are, and thought, "What's the worst possible color I could use here?" The answer of course, was pink, which is pretty common among golf shirts.

Drawn in Photoshop on the graphic tablet.

Here's the first sketch I did of Morty. I stupidly drew him without looking at my drawing of Madge as a reference. When I finally placed the two side by side, I was shocked at how wildly the styles differed. This version of Morty is almost photo-realistic compared to the extremely cartoony style of Madge. Back to the drawing board!

This was my second attempt. He looks much more like he belongs to the same species as Madge here.

  2. Thanks! My drawing process is probably a little strange. I will have a very clear image in my head and will sit down and draw according to that image. Then at the very last second I will throw out half of it, add something totally different and change all the colors. Usually it turns out better than the image in my head. I have no idea where the last minute inspiration comes from either.

If you want to draw, go for it!
