This week the U.S. Post Office released a new Forever stamp honoring Maya Angelou, the late poet, author and civil rights activist. The stamp was dedicated in a ceremony in Washington D.C., hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey.
The stamp features one of Angelou's most famous quotes, along with a portrait of Angelou painted by artist Ross Rossin in 2013.
Some critics have called the veracity of the quote into question, but Postmaster Patrick R. Donahoe defended the choice, saying, "Eh, it sounds like something she probably said. She was always saying something."
Donahoe went on to say, "Look, I've got bigger things to worry about than who said what on some goddamned stamp. Christ, in the time it took me to say that we just lost another six billion dollars!"
Plans are currently underway for a stamp honoring another prominent figure in Black Female History, Florida Evans.
