In 1974, Tom Baker took over the role of the Doctor on Doctor Who. BBC costume designer James Acheson decided the new Doctor should wear a scarf as part of his outfit. He bought a large quantity of wool yarn and gave it to a local knitter with the unlikely name of Begonia Pope.
Pope misunderstood Acheson's instructions and used every inch of wool she was given, knitting a scarf that was over fourteen feet long!
Acheson was appalled when he saw the overly long scarf, but Tom Baker loved it and immediately began wearing it. His preposterously long neckwear went on to become one of the most recognized fashion accessories in pop culture.
