Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your feelings toward our sewer of a world), the rogue asteroid was pretty small, less than a football field in length. Even if it had plowed into the Earth it would only have vaporized a city or two. It wouldn't have wiped out our entire sorry civilization.
