Yesterday I went to see the prequel to John Carpenter's classic 1982 movie The Thing, which in a white hot burst of creativity is also titled The Thing. Why they didn't call it The Thing: The Beginning or The Thing: Origin, I have no idea. Carpenter's film was a remake of the 1951 movie The Thing From Another World, which most people shorten to just The Thing. So now we have three damn movies with the exact same plot and the exact same title. Well done, Hollywood.
I'll save my review of the movie for another time. What I really want to talk about is that I sat through the entire movie thinking that I was watching actress Summer Glau in the starring role. Then the end credits rolled and I was shocked to see that I'd been really been watching Mary Elizabeth Winstead the whole time!
Look at them! They're the same damn person! That's Summer on the left and Mary Elizabeth on the right. I think. Maybe it's the other way around in reverse. Honestly I'm not even sure I used the right photos.
I have no idea why Summer A.K.A. Mary Elizabeth is playing this cruel hoax on the movie-going public. Maybe it's some elaborate scheme to bilk Hollywood out of twice the paychecks? Maybe she's some sort of double agent? Maybe she uses one of her identities for TV and one for movies?
Or maybe there really are two of them, and they're the result of a top secret decades-long government cloning experiment. The government gave her clone a separate identity so that the public doesn't find out about their clandestine experiment. That seems the most likely scenario.
