Pixar? More Like Grift-ar!

This week Disney/Pixar debuted the second trailer for their upcoming opus Lightyear.

I mentioned this film last year, pointing out that it supposedly features the real Buzz Lightyear, whose space-faring adventures inspired the action figure seen in the Toy Story movies. It's an admittedly cool concept, but there's just one problem with it— Lightyear clearly takes place in a future filled with advanced technology, such as warp drives and android cats. Which would mean the Toy Story movies weren't set in the present day, but in the future as well!

Ah, but it gets worse!

As I watched this new trailer, I started noticing that some of the tech looked a bit... familiar.

Like the spherical spaceship seen on the left. I can't help but think it looks a LOT like the Aries Ib Lunar Lander from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Sure, it may just be a coincidence, as a sphere is the simplest form in the universe. 

On the other hand... why design a ship that's a dead ringer for one from one of the most famous space films of all time? 

And then there's this shot, which is a bit harder to defend. 

Buzz stands in the middle of a fog-filled, swampy planet while wearing a bright orange flight suit. Just like Luke Skywalker, who stood in the middle of a fog-filled, swampy planet while wearing a bright orange jumpsuit in The Empire Strikes Back.

They could have made Buzz's suit literally ANY other color besides orange here. I can't think of any reason to go with that hue other than to evoke Luke's ensemble.

We then see some sort of aliens in battle suits. Yeah, those are Zakus from the Gundam franchise.

Especially when you see their "faces," what with the single red eye in the middle of the black visor. Jaysis, they're not even trying to hide it here!

OK, I'm not accusing Pixar of outright plagiarism here, but... OK, yeah, I am. And it's not even the first time they've done so. They knowingly swiped all these elements, and thought no one would ever spot 'em. But I noticed, Pixar. I noticed.

Emotional Rescue

A few months ago I posted a series of Nine Other Emotions That Didn't Make The Cut In Pixar's "Inside/Out." It was a humorous look at, well, other emotional characters that didn't make it into the movie.

Looks like my little post was more accurate than I realized. According to Pete Docter, co-director of the film, the original story idea featured far more than five main emotion characters, including ones such as Schadenfreude, Hope, Pride and Ennui.

Before they whittled them down, the plan was to feature a whopping twenty six emotion characters. Twenty six! Can you believe it?

Are there even that many emotions? Surely not.

The only ones I'm personally familiar with are Rage, Intense Rage, Searing Rage, Blind Rage, White Hot Rage and Intense White Hot Searing Blinding Rage. That's only six. But I guess those Pixar guys know what they're talking about.

Nine Other Emotions That Didn't Make The Cut In Pixar's "Inside Out"

Pixar's done it again! Critics and audiences alike have fallen in love with the studio's latest film, Inside Out. It's the story of a young girl named Riley and the wacky cast of personified emotions who live inside her head and control her life.

The movie features five different emotions that control the life of young Riley: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger. According to director Pete Docter, the original script featured dozens of other emotional characters, including Dread, Obsession and Mortification. Unfortunately many of these had to be dropped for time and story purposes, as they whittled the cast down to just five.

The staff here at Bob Canada's BlogWorld was lucky enough to get their hands on a few of the model sheets for these deleted characters, and are presenting them here for the first time.

Sweet Emotion

Have you seen the trailer for Disney/Pixar's upcoming animated opus Inside Out yet? If so, you no doubt noticed they use Aerosmith's Sweet Emotion as the trailer's soundtrack.

It's an awesome song, even after all these years. I'm not sure what it's doing in a trailer for a kid's movie though, as it's a bit... suggestive.

I'm betting the suits over at Disney never bothered to listen past the first ten seconds of the song. If they had, the hair on their collective heads would be standing straight up right about now, particularly at the "Standin' in front just shakin' your ass" line.

And don't forget the immortal lyric, "You can't catch me 'cause the rabbit done died." Remember boys, next time you get your underage girlfriend pregnant, don't worry about it! Just skip town and leave her to deal with your mess nine months later! Disney said so!

Continuity, Schmontinuity

Disney/Pixar's Monsters University premiered in theaters last week. It's a prequel to Monsters, Inc., telling the tale of how Mike and Sully first met in college.

Hmm... college you say? Let's roll some footage from Monsters, Inc., shall we?
