Don't Worry, Be... A Warrior

Take a good look at this DVD cover for the sure-to-be-classic film Princess Warrior.

I swear the first time I glanced at it I thought for sure it said Princess Worrier. No doubt that version would be far more entertaining than the actual movie.

Princess Worrier:
"You seek to betray me, wizard? Your powers are useless against my soul sword! Prepare to... wait, did I lock the house before I left today? Yes... yes, I'm sure I did. Prepare to die, Gornak! My soul sword will drain the life force from... oh gods, I forgot to send my annual fealty to the King. I need to dispatch a raven to the castle immediately. As I was saying, Gornak, your evil days are numbered! My sword will cleave... hmm. I wonder if this cough is anything serious? I've had if for a week now. I need to visit the apothecary as soon as I'm done here. My luck it's probably the plague. Have at you, Gornak! Um... Gornak? Hello? Where'd he go?

DVD Doppelgängers: Prometheus Vs. Prometheus Trap Vs. Radio Free Albemuth

Recently I was browsing through my local video store (yes, they still exist, and yes, I still go there) and saw this.

Something about this cover seems awfully familiar. I can't quite put my finger on where I might have seen it before though...

Ah. Now I remember.

The designer of the Prometheus Trap cover couldn't have swiped the original more if he tried. It's like he xeroxed the original  cover art and scribbled the world "trap" on it.

Just look at them next to one another! Look at 'em, I say! Both have the same blue color scheme, the exact same washed out, desaturated space-suited leads above the title (their heads are even the same size!), the same crackling energy background and the same black strip in the middle, behind the title.

But wait, there's more! Amazingly, both feature spaceships tilted at the exact same angle, orbiting planets with identically curved horizons, complete with moons above them.

I've seen a lot of swiped cover designs in the past few years, but this one is hands down the most blatant. There's no way in hell this was a coincidence.

There are two reasons why studios do this. One is what I call "Inferred Marketing." A studio makes their advertising look exactly like that of a more popular and expensive film, hoping to evoke an association in the mind of the consumer. They figure in the unlikely event that someone really liked Prometheus, they'll see Prometheus Trap on the shelf and assume it's more of the same, and be compelled to pick it up.

The second reason is "Confusion Marketing." By making their film's cover nearly indistinguishable from that of the original, they hope easily confused consumers will pick up their knock off, thinking it's the real thing.

I also saw this cover in the store, which is pretty darned close to Prometheus as well. Here though the designer took the bold step of angling the spaceship or whatever that is in the opposite direction. Inspired!

Oddly enough even though these two knockoffs are doing their absolute best to ape the look of the Prometheus cover, their plots are completely different.

Prometheus Trap is about a spaceship crew who investigate a derelict ship and become trapped in a repeating time loop.

Radio Free Albemuth has even less to do with Prometheus, as it's a strange, fictionalized autobiography of scifi author Philip K. Dick, set in an alternate reality America.

By the way, get a load of Radio's cast there on the cover. It stars Scott Wilson, aka Hershel of The Walking Dead, looking a good twenty years younger than he did on that show (even though the film was made in 2010). It also stars one Alanis Morissette. Now that's ironic (see what I did there)!

There's something, I don't know... sleazy about all this. I feel like you shouldn't have to trick and bamboozle consumers into watching your movie.

DVD Doppelgängers: Zombieworld Vs. Zombieland

Last week I was in my local video store and saw this DVD of Zombieworld.

Something about this cover seems awfully familiar, but I can't quite put my finger on where I might have seen it before...

Ah. Now I remember.

There's no way you can convince me that this wasn't intentional. Go on, try it. Try and convince me. You can't do it, I say. Both feature the same decimated, smoking Earth floating in a formless void, and both have nearly identical titles superimposed. But then in a burst of creative energy, the Zombieworld designer added a severed, undead hand clutching his globe. Inventive!

The cover design is about the only thing the two films share though. Zombieland is a well-made horror-comedy in the style of Shaun Of The Dead, about four survivors of a zombie apocalypse.

Zombieworld, on the other hand, is a (very) low budget anthology. It features several short zombie films that are loosely strung together in a fake news broadcast format, including an anchorman who's been bitten and is himself slowly transforming. The shorts vary wildly in quality, and you'd be much better off watching ZombieLAND for the tenth time.

Cover Up

Take a look at this new Blu-ray cover for the 1997 film The Full Monty.

Confession time: I've never seen The Full Monty. It's one of those films that for one reason or another I've never got around to watching, so I have no idea what it's about. Judging from this cover though, I'd say it's a horror movie about a deranged doctor who decapitates his victims and grafts their heads onto new bodies. Think Frankenstein crossed with The Human Centipede.

Hold on... what's that now? OK, I'm being told that's not what happens. Apparently the film is about a group of unemployed working class British men who decide to become Chippendale-type dancers. Are you flippin' kidding me?

Welp, you certainly could have fooled me with this cover. Look at that thing! Just look at that horrible, horrible paste up job. You couldn't make a worse looking cover on purpose. None of those actors were anywhere near those bodies when this photo was taken.

Apparently the graphic design department at Fox has decided to stop using Photoshop and has resorted to cutting out photos of heads and crudely pasting them onto stock shots of nude men. Definitely a questionable move in this age of desktop publishing and digital manipulation, but kudos to them for bucking the trend and trying something different. Even if it is a dismal failure that should be buried deep underground and the earth above it salted.

DVD Covers In Which One Or More Of The Characters Appears To Be Pregnant, But Isn't

I'm starting a new feature here on Bob Canada's BlogWorld-- It's called DVD Covers In Which One Or More Of The Characters Appears To Be Pregnant, But Isn't. I think it's really gonna take off!

Up first is the 2012 made-for-cable movie Strawberry Summer. I'm pretty sure that's not Shelly Long there on the right, so I have to assume it's Julie Mond, a name I don't recognize. If you give this cover a sideways glance it looks like she's at least eleven months pregnant, until you realize it's just an awkwardly placed guitar.

What's that? Hold on... I'm being told that the normal human gestation period is only nine months. OK fine, she looks like she's at least nine months pregnant. You're sure it's only nine? There's never been some world record where they went for eleven? No? That would be something though, wouldn't it?

Hold on a second-- I'm on the Google right now and it seems that in 1945 there was a case in which a human woman gave birth after 375 days. That's over twelve months! So suck on that, Mr. Editor!

Next up is the 2004 horror movie Taxi, starring Queen Latifah and Jimmy Fallon. Sadly, I recognize both those names. What's that? Now I'm being told that this isn't a horror movie. With a cast like that you could've fooled me!

Here both characters appear to be at least nine months pregnant (especially Mr. Fallon), but it turns out it's just the unfortunate placement of the car behind them.

I seriously thought Fallon was pregnant in the film for the first thirty or forty times I saw this cover. Let me tell you, that idea severely distorted my idea of what the movie was about. One day I finally realized what I was actually seeing on the cover and it all made more sense. It still wasn't enough to get me to watch it though.

Next is... well, that's about it for now. I kind of thought there'd be more DVD Covers In Which One Or More Of The Characters Appears To Be Pregnant, But Isn't. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea for a new feature after all. Let's forget the whole thing. Sorry I wasted everyone's time. Please go back to diddling with your phones.
