So I drew this bird, and then decided to draw a cage for him. The cage gave me a lot of trouble; I kept trying to draw the bars that should be IN FRONT of the bird and it just wasn't working. The bars kept covering up important parts of the bird's face. Finally I realized that it's just a cartoon-- you don't really NEED to see the front bars to buy the idea that he's in a cage-- so I took 'em off. Problem solved.
I also added an image of a piece of old cloth to the top layer to dirty up the image a bit.
Drawn in Photoshop with the graphic tablet.
Here's the original bird sketch.

Your drawings are amazing. I enjoyed looking through them all. I only wish I could do anything a quarter as well as you in Photoshop!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I've been using Photoshop since the early 90s and I'm still learning new things about it. So hang in there and keep at it.
ReplyDeleteI just started this blog, so all of my work isn't up yet. You can see more on my Flickr site at http://www.flickr.com/photos/bobcanada/
i get hung up on stuff like that bird cage all the time, great idea to just say "hey its just a cartoon, i can do whatever i want!" i think tex avery used that phrase all the time!
ReplyDeleteLittle known fact about Tex Avery: I read that he suffered from kidney problems later in life because he would get so into animating at his desk that he didn't want to get up and go pee. He'd hold it in as long as possible and that eventually caused problems.
ReplyDeleteAfter I read that I make sure to visit the restroom promptly.
